What is general counsel?
General legal advice on disputes that have not yet become formal legal disputes. Oftentimes large corporations have a general counsel that consists of one or more attorneys who review potential legal disputes and advise the company on what steps to take. For individuals and small businesses, it is often not financially feasible to hire someone to be a full-time attorney employee, but consulting for a few hours is both feasible and advisable in order to best prepare you or your small business for an upcoming dispute.
When would I seek general counsel?
It depends on your financial wherewithal, but typically one would seek general legal advice once a dispute was brewing or a large contract was about to be signed. In those instances, an ounce of prevention is often worth a pound of cure and you can avoid unnecessary costs and stress later by obtaining legal counsel at the outset.
